2006 Youth Mentor Hunt A Huge Success!

On Saturday, September 23, 2006, the Mecosta County Chapter of Pheasants Forever held its Annual Youth Mentor Hunt. The event was held at the Haymarsh Hunt Club in Morley, Michigan.

Nine youths participated in this hunt along with their parents or mentors. Two youth who participated were from the Muskegon River Valley Big Brothers Big Sisters program. The day began with coffee, juice and donuts for the aspiring hunters. Volunteers were introduced to the group followed by a review of the safety rules and procedures.

Next the group moved to the hunting field where each youth was given the opportunity to shoot at clay targets and refamiliarize themselves with the safe operation of their firearms. Three hunting teams were established consisting of a dog handler, a hunting dog, mentor (parent) and one youth.

All together 27 pheasants were released for the youth. Some were successful, some were not, but all enjoyed the beautiful weather, food, fun and good dog work. Thanks to our particpants, volunteers and contributors who helped make this event possible. Special thanks to: the Haymarsh Hunt Club, dog handlers Tom Rorabaugh, Joe Hazewinkel, Dan Robinson, Rob Trethewey and Rob Zajkowski, Pere Marquette Catering Company, Big Rapids Dunkin Donuts and Antlers Resaurant of Canadian Lakes.

Pictures tell the story.
